the sunday nook {indian summer}…

romain ricard

perfect for an indian summer, today’s sunday nook features some of my favourite combinations…

a pretty palette of maize & mustard, midnight blue & softest pink is both soothing & inviting…

whilst polished concrete flooring overlaid with raw wood & linen offers a tactile retreat…

finally, when your eyes get too weary to read you can always rest them on the wooden beams & a perfectly-formed niche filled with sculptural delights…

simple, pretty & perfect!

the sunday nook {pull up a pew}…

the musket room bar

you might well remember this little ode to perfection a little while back: well today’s sunday nook is a continuation of the theme, with a slightly more detailed look…

it is, of course, the musket room & truth be told i’m a little obsessed with this venue at the moment…

it’s a simple space which is rich in detail, raw & yet refined…

scalloped tiles blend seamlessly into the wooden boards beyond, their curves mirrored in the brassy bar-top lamps & cushioned leather seat pads…

& from the bare brick walls to the rhythmic undulation of the wood slab bar top, texture & movement abounds…

this space, more than many others, beckons me to pull up a pew…

the sunday nook {bare brick}…

luiz fernando grabowsky

today’s nook represents loft-style living done to {almost} perfection…

this bedroom {part of a house designed by luiz fernando grabowsky} is shamelessly masculine & serves as yet another fabulous lesson in the power of a neutral palette…

against a backdrop of bare brick the wooden floors, mirrored backboards & soft layering work harmoniously whilst geometric patterns & the merest hint of a warming hue enliven the space…

yes, i would have swapped out the wooden trunk for a leather one to mix up those finishes even more, but a girl can’t have everything….

this, afterall, is very much a man’s world!

the sunday nook {a cosy corner}…

hotel delmano

if the hotel delmano was my local you could rest assured you’d find me tucked away in this cosy nook on a regular basis…

it’s perfectly imperfect: from the crooked seascape hanging overhead to the peeling plaster walls, it feels like it’s always been this way…

a touch of brass brings warmth to the cool marble table top & the leather banquette seating…

all that’s needed now is a cool breeze & a stiff drink…

happy sunday!

the sunday nook {lovely lines}…

nature nook

the sunday nook on a monday tuesday… what the!?!

apologies, my days are beginning to blur & the weeks are running away with me, but i wanted to share this lovely fireside retreat…

with all those textures bumping up against one another & a myriad of angles criss-crossing the space, this cosy nook could be forgiven for feeling a little chaotic…

but then there’s that neutral palette to the rescue again, reigning it all in & bringing with it a sense of harmony & cohesion…

but mostly i love this space because it reminds me of the importance of creating nooks in the first place…

this one’s definitely going in the home inspiration folder!

the sunday nook {into the mix}…

panton

hard to mind the notion of going back to work tomorrow if my desk looked as good as today’s sunday nook…

i love pretty much everything about this informal office space, from the glossy verner panton chairs to the string pendant light & all that lies between…

& whilst i’m not entirely sure i would have thought to combine these two textures, with all the other elements that have been thrown into the mix here they just work…

the sunday nook {a shady retreat}…

a shaded nook

sun, sun & more sun: london is a different city entirely given a dose of golden rays…

we’re off to enjoy the great outdoors with a book in hand & a picnic lunch…

but as much as i love a sun-kissed look, i’m really all about a shaded nook & this one is my idea of heaven on a hot day…

expanses of comfy seating, a surface upon which to lay out a feast & the promise of candle light once the daylight fades…

throw in a pitcher of something cold & wet, a soft breeze carrying a hint of jazz & i’m as good as putty in your clammy hands…

the sunday nook {turkish delight}…

turkish delight

i always dreamt of spending my later years luxuriating in a home with a view: preferably looking out on to an angry sea or a moody mountain range…

but inner-city living has challenged me to broaden my perspective a little…

what to do when you’re resigned to spending your days looking inward? make its beauty rival what lies beyond!

& this internal courtyard is the perfect example: more delicious than any box of sugary delights & no powder coating required, this turkish delight relies on pattern plays & a restricted palette, contrasts & repetition…

there’s a rhythm & a rhyme to what goes where & why & as much as the eye dances from one surface to another, it always finds a peaceful place to rest…

a tasty treat indeed!

{ps, more on this beautiful retreat here}

the sunday nook {mario testino}…

mario testino

though the british summer is not playing ball today, i’m taking it outdoors again this week…

you might be familiar with the hollywood hills home of celebrated photographer mario testino, but have you seen the patio?

against a backdrop of metal-framed french windows & whitewashed walls sits a subdued palette comprised of stone floors, wooden daybeds & earthen pots…

some sculptural planting & woven light shades add textural interest whilst graphic cushions & patinated lamp bases punctuate the setting with pattern & colour…

just the right balance of visual interest & decorative restraint in my book!
