everything but the man {a photo diary}…

everything but the man

now that i have your attention…

let’s turn it to the actual men in our lives {or our other halves in general}, shall we?

it’s overdue really, especially in this house, as my boyfriend’s presence is sorely under-represented in the decor of our home…

it’s part of the occupational hazard of living, breathing & blogging everything design that you come across a lot of covetable finds on your travels: there’s always something on my wish list or catching my eye & over the years i’ve brought a lot of the good stuff home, that’s for sure…

but my boyfriend is virtually the complete opposite…

he is covetous of very little…

this is both a good & a bad thing…

good because i’m not having to design our home around a festering favourite lounge chair which is long past its use date or, worse still, a signed & framed photo of his favourite sports hero {sorry, i dislike those intensely}…

but it’s also bad, & a little sad, because when i look around our home i see almost nothing that reflects him or his tastes…

yes there’s a tv the size of the titanic, a built-for-purpose {ie, ugly} desk chair, some clothes, a few books & a sweet little pile of poker chips collected on his travels, but that really is pretty much the sum of it: the materialistic sum of his 35 years on this earth…

so i’ve been plotting & planning ways i can incorporate him & his tastes a little more into our decor, especially now that we’re building a home together from scratch…

& i’ve come up with an idea which i hope will get him thinking & feeling about design in general so he can better articulate his tastes…

because whilst i could yabber on all day & night about what i like & why, i find the same isn’t always true for him…

so here it is, my devious mission, should he choose to accept it: 30 photos in 30 days…

for the next 30 days i want my boyfriend to photographically document {& caption} at least one thing each day that catches his eye, makes him take pause, brings a smile to his chops or equally provokes an irritated gnashing of the teeth…

because a bad reaction to design is as important as a good one, right?

it all contributes to the story of what makes him tick!

the photos can be of anything really: the cut of a suit, the colour of the sky, the railings on the bus or the sleek joinery of a desk, the scuffed leather of his shoe, the packaging his lunch comes in or the shiny button that operates the lift that feels so soft to the touch…

anything

as long as the design provokes a reaction from him, either good or bad…

the point is to activate his senses, engage his thoughts & feelings & really, really start to get him analysing what surrounds him in his day-to-day dealings & how those things in turn impact him, good or bad…

so, what do you think?

is your other half’s tastes reflected in your home &, if not, would they consider taking on the challenge too? do you want to join me & we can share our findings in a month’s time?

{ps, i’ll report back, just as soon as i get the boy on board!}

  1. That’s one Hot Smokin’ man, a great find Sue! Is that a ring I see on his 3rd finger left hand?? Lucky lady.
Ahem, back to your post… Mine doesn’t get a say and generally isn’t interested in having a say, although we have successfully joint-chosen on larger items in our home, because I’ve twisted his arm 🙂 Good luck with your venture, I fear you may have a mountain to climb x

    • i’ve got my mountain climbing gear already packed! haha… i know the big no-go areas & the general thumbs up, but i think i’d genuinely like him to have some interest or at least understanding about the aesthetic process… having said that, i may regret the monster i stand to create! haha!

  2. Ha. I did it my way because I don’t live with a man. They come and stay and are always so greatful, that there is no discussion around decor and design. It’s my way or…. (only kidding)

I think this is a great idea – but I also feel you have a mountain to climb. Making someone be interested in design is not easy. Maybe he’s just happy for you to take charge and build that amazing ‘home’. Who knows? Anyway good luck with it.

I’m a little gutted as I thought the man in photo was your fella (kidding again:-) So, is he your toyboy or are you that young? Spill!

    • i’m 42, he’s the number on the balloons! 😉 i don’t want to force design down his throat, but building a home is such a huge investment, and not just of money, that i think it warrants him taking a little time out to determine his loves & hates so that i can then interpret that into our home… i’m hoping it will save arguments in the long-run if i know & understand where he stands on things 😉 will let you know how i go!

    • i will not conform! bahahahaha… i can’t commit to daily, but then sometimes i get on a roll… like to mix it up, you know!

  3. So, he is a toyboy!!!

I think you’re absolutely right in trying to get him involved, just don’t know whether it’ll work. I hope it does coz a) it’s fun to be involved and b) he will appreciate having helped in the process of creating your ‘home’ together..

  4. Oh, I cannot wait to see his 30 photos…what insight will we see from his numerical mind… You are such an ideas woman – this is BRILLIANT! LOVE LOVE LOVE!

    • there may be a lot of prodding with a long stick to get this done, but i’m giving him reprieve until monday & then it’s game on! should be interesting!

  5. I just read your post to my boyfriend to see what his reaction would be to such a challenge… his answer? “She’s gonna get 30 pictures of boobs.” lol (he was joking obviously ;))

Can’t wait to see the result and what a lovely guy to go along with it! xxx

    • haha! that could make for an interesting post indeed! fortunately there has not, as yet, been a boob shot, but i’ll keep you posted! 😉

i'd love to hear your thoughts...
