having long been tantalised & taunted by tasty morsels of design tidbits via sibella court‘s twitter feed, i’m excited to finally see her latest collaboration: a sydney-based chinese restaurant called mr wong…
& it doesn’t disappoint…
i suspect lovers of sibella’s bowerbird instincts will be particularly enthralled…
painted portraits, calligraphy, bamboo furnishings, exposed brickwork, wooden rafters & rack-upon-rack of asian pottery, bamboo steamers & other cooking paraphernalia all interplay in a heady mix, resulting in what is, by all accounts, a faithful recreation of 1930s shanghai infused with a modern touch of industrialia befitting the site’s previous life as a nightclub…
& the food doesn’t look bad either!

Wow that place is amazing. I love that it looks nothing like a normal chinese restaurant. It looks more like some London opium den from a Sherlock Holmes era. How unexpectied and pleasing!
it’s wonderful isn’t it? has a whiff of speakeasy/opium den/teahouse to me… love it!
