the intern diaries {week twelve}…

next time you’re lucky enough to be wined & dined, be sure to do these few things: linger a little longer in that comfty restaurant chair, admire the grain of the table top or the colour of the paint on the walls that makes the space look just so!

savour the cold caress of the door pull as you make your way into the bathrooms, marvel at the formation of the floor tiles & smile sweetly at the flawless reflection those well-lit mirrors afford you…

why?

because some poor bugger had to agonise long and hard over choosing each & every one of those items in order to make the cohesive whole presented before you…

week twelve: the nooks & crannies…

this week’s task is scheduling, scheduling & more scheduling… & who knew exactly how many components it would take to make a restaurant a functioning space: i certainly didn’t, at least not prior to the events of this past week!

starting with a floor plan & aided by some detailed elevations, my task was to work my way through each & every nook & cranny of this site & record all the furniture, fixtures & equipment required to make it come to life…

from bulkhead fittings to floor tiles, toilet basins to door pulls, pass counters to bar tops, all must be counted, coded & accounted for: believe me, it’s no mean feat, even if this is a relatively-small project…

i’m still not finished, but i have already drawn a few conclusions in this process:

a) sourcing sanitary ware is boring {loos, flush mechanisms, cisterns, bidets, etc.}

b) my mind wanders all too easily when bored; and

c) there’s a market out there for anyone who can design sexy outdoor furniture for restaurants…

what’s even more enlightening is observing how i work when faced with what seems like an insummountable list of decisions to be made: brass fittings or chrome? marble tops or timber? tapered legs or turned? {have i mentioned i’m a libran & therefore astrologically dispositioned to procrastinate?}

take each of these decisions & times them by 3 {as it’s prudent to have options to show the client} & it’s easy to see how a week of your life can disappear in the blink of an eye…

sometimes i’m surprisingly remarkably methodical & stick to finding one “perfect” item at a time… like hunting down the missing piece to a giant jigsaw… i find this method forces me to be more decisive & focussed…

other times i must concede i do fall down the internet rabbit hole: whilst trying to source a door handle, for example, it’s not uncommon to find myself some two hours later staring vacantly at a site with bench cushions {or dining chairs, pendant lights, upholstery leathers… take your pick really}, door handle still m.i.a…

at these times i find a little regrouping session helps… pick an easy target, get a few quick wins in & then resume the search for the more elusive pieces…

most importantly of all though? remember to schedule in a tea break!

how far would you go…

…to make a rental property truly feel like home?

it seems everywhere i turn of late there’s talk of people making home improvements to their temporary lodgings & it makes me ponder, how far is too far?

i’m seriously considering an update to the carpet situation in our potential new dwelling, as i’m not entirely sure i can go two years with the current situation…

but this will be the first time in nearly 25 years of renting {gulp, really? that long?} that i’ve seriously considered making such an investment in a temporary abode… sure i’ve replaced the odd light fitting or rehung the curtains & i’ve furnished throughout in our current place… there was even one home in melbourne where we overhauled the garden from a bag of weeds to a thing of beauty, but i’ve never really made any significant changes to somewhere that wasn’t mine or spent money on something i couldn’t take with me when i moved… both back home & here in england it doesn’t really seem to be the done thing…

& so i’m wondering, is it a product of our culture that determines how far we take our updates?

la-based stylist emily henderson is making me positively green with envy with tales of overhauling her rental digs… bedrooms & studies alike are awash in a sea of oceanic-hued paints… storage cupboards have been fitted & flooring updates already made…

whilst san franciscan victoria of sfgirlbybay has taken it one step further still & is actually in the process of painting the outside of her on-loan home… now there’s a first! it’s bound to be the best looking rental on the block, but what an investment indeed!

& holly becker, author of decor8, has long since chronicled the trials & tribulations of making her rental apartment in germany feel like home… in her latest place she’s even installed a new kitchen: cooker, cupboards & everything else including the kitchen sink! but then, in fairness, it appears that’s the done thing in germany {& i do declare, i still think that’s the oddest thing ever, don’t you? rental apartments that come without a kitchen installed… what happens to all of those torn out kitchen units which don’t fit the next rental space?}

i do wonder, had i lived elsewhere would i have been bolder with my rental makeovers? or is it just a case of being braver, regardless of the post code?

how about you? have you ever pulled the trigger and overhauled a home that wasn’t really yours?

i’d love to know all… do tell!

the sunday nook {back to basics}…

i’m writing this week’s sunday nook from the comfort of one of my own favourite retreats, my bed… so i thought it might make sense to keep to the theme!

this rather utilitarian space particularly appeals to me at the moment as i face the prospect of moving home…

it’s always at this stage of the moving process when the notion of simplifying, streamlining & living a life less burdened by belongings comes to the forefront…

& whilst i know this pared-back bedroom is what most people would deem suitable for no more than their first night in a new abode, this is a look i could definitely consider living with longer term…

simple linen bedding, a light source & a good book equals nirvana to me right about now…

what more could a girl want or need {besides an open window & the scent of blossoms in the air}?

happy dreaming…

a place to call home {fingers crossed}…

i’ve been out flat hunting again & today’s viewing brings the tally to 16 flats in 5 days…

but it also brings this little lovely… the fruits of my labour…

there’s nothing quite like that feeling of finding a place that feels like home the moment you turn the key… & i think i fell in love with this place before the key was even turned…

of course it doesn’t tick all of the boxes, but it’s the first place i’ve really seen since this process began where i could truly imagine myself living…

you can make as many wishlists as you like {oh, and i have, like this one here} but when it comes down to it, it’s more about that extraordinarily wondrous “i’m home” feeling than a bunch of ticked boxes {for me at least}…

over the years i’ve looked at and lived in so many rental properties and each and every time it’s been about that feeling

though it ultimately has its benefits, this approach certainly makes the whole flat hunting process a tricky one… i mean, for starters, how do you describe to a real estate agent what it is that you’re looking for, if what you’re looking for is something that makes your heart skip a beat… there simply are no words to describe that!

take this flat for example… had i stayed true & fast to my wishlist i would never even have looked at this flat: there’s no outdoor space, the bathroom was made for pixies, it has carpet in the bedrooms {i hate, loathe & detest carpet pretty much anywhere}, etc…

not exactly a no brainer for contention!

but had i not been to look at this flat i would never have known exactly what it does have {& believe me, this photo does it no justice whatsoever}… & what it does have is that “welcome, you’re home” kind of a feeling…

the mental move in has already started, so i’m sending the lad off to view this flat tomorrow morning to see if it’s a goer from a logical viewpoint {ie, his}… i’ve steeled myself for the chance that this won’t be our next home on the basis of a few other issues we’d need to resolve first {for example, it’s offered furnished, but we need for it not to be, & it’s available in a week & we’re not available for a month}…

other than that, this could be all systems go…

wish us luck!

the sunday nook {abigail ahern}…

given it’s been such a splendid summer’s day here in blighty, let’s make the most of the fading light & stay outdoors for our sunday nook…

anyone who knows me knows that i have long since been bewitched by the enchanting world of interior designer abigail ahern… she tantalises & delights with trickery & tongue-in-cheekedness, & i’m pleased to confirm that her particular blend of wizardry is not limited to the indoors…

i call this nook my midsummer night’s dream!

it is magical, inviting, seductive & enticing & positively everything your home should be… inside or out!

better still, this lounge blurs the line between the two zones through the clever combination of some everyday techniques which even us mere mortals could adopt:

ambiance is achieved through a medley of light forms: table lamps sit proudly alongside an oversized anglepoise, fairly lights festoon a distant mirror & the flickering flames of candles & an open fire conspire to intoxicate… set high, low & everywhere inbetween, the magic is as much in the illumination as it is in the shadows…

whimsy banishes formality & warms the heart: who doesn’t love an illuminated moose head or a perpetually-perky parrot {not to mention a friendly penguin & a pretty poodle}… but if animals aren’t your thing, any item with humour or quirk can cast an equally-mesmerising spell… like abigail, play with unexpected scale & seductive forms to amp the intrigue up a notch…

colour, the friend of every interior & out… this nook’s predominantly muted hues & restful neutrals are punctuated with an unexpected jolt of brilliant blue {you could of course choose any colour}… the result? it sedates & bedazzles, calms & tantalises all at once!

texture is like a long-lost friend: it wraps its loving arms around you in a sweet, welcoming embrace… abigail has combined slubby woollen cushions, flocked lights & pom pom fringing {finishes normally confined to indoor spaces} with cushioned upholstery to cocoon & caress…

which brings us nicely on to comfort… let’s face it, without it what’s the point… here a formation of sink-in-able loungers lull you into a dream-like state… is there any better way to be?

i for one am positively spellbound!

friday’s thoughts…

so, i did have this wonderful little post lined up for today all about signature style, what it is & why it’s important…

but then i went and viewed 9 rental properties and signed up at 7 different agencies & i’m officially done!

so i leave you instead with somebody else’s wise words which feel particularly apt to bear in mind whilst looking for that elusive perfect rental property!

happy friday all… here’s hoping for some sunshine!
