the embellished menagerie {donya coward}…

an unexpected bonus to a spot of window shopping yesterday came in the form of my latest discovery, artist donya coward

donya is based in nottingham, britain’s historical home of the lace industry… and it is the product of this history which informs, in part, her artform: what i like to refer to as ‘the embellished menagerie’…

each of donya’s animals are lovingly crafted using an assortment of vintage & antique laces, embroideries, embellishments, fabrics & haberdashery…

imperfections and histories ingrained in the materials are showcased, not hidden, to add character and individuality to the pieces…

with an emphasis on preserving the craftsmanship and skills of yesteryear whilst breathing new life into them…

curios, religious decoration, nature, masked festivals & other people’s junk, among other things, inspire donya’s craft…

so, if you’ve ever secretly harboured desires to see the head of the neighbour’s barking mutt mounted on your living room walls or, perhaps more reasonably, immortalise your own canine, jackdaw or pet zebra, be sure to check out donya’s website

or, for a limited time, you can see a selection of donya’s creations on display at anthropologie‘s king’s road store…

    • i think they’re really clever, and up close the detail is amazing… not sure i’d want a mounted dog’s head on my wall, but in the right setting i think they’d be whimsical and fun! maybe a dog hotel! 😉

i'd love to hear your thoughts...
