into the woods {bedside tables}…

i must confess, there are some elements of home furnishings that still, to this day, defy me… some are just altogether too grown-up to commit to {like buying a “proper” dining table}, others too elusive {the perfect antique wardrobe} and then there are some that, well, inexplicably they just leave me convulsing at the very mention of their name…  allow me to introduce to you my true decorating nemesis: bedside tables…

you would not be the first to ponder how one acquires a phobia for such a seemingly innocuous piece of furniture… it’s not rational, i know… but it’s very, very real… for far too long these ugly, contrived concoctions with drawers & knobs & integrated tea makers {i swear some have those} have ruined what would, & should, otherwise be a very restful space…

& so it was with great relief that i stumbled upon an alternative which is not only simple & stylish, but oh so good on the eye… behold, the wood block…

& this very room is where my love affair with a lump of lumber first began…

i remember distinctly the sharp intake of breath when i first came across this photo on the glossy pages of livingetc. all those years ago… a feverish whoop of delight & a frantic dog-earring of the magazine page swiftly followed…

room for a cup of tea, a good book & a table lamp… done, done & done… what more could a night stand need?

& it never fails to disappoint me… every time i spy yet another convert to the wood-block-bedside-table brigade my heart skips a little beat of joy, reaffirming why i fell for it in the first place… raw & strong, understated & yet possessing an undeniable presence, i think these pieces are majestic!

& so divine is this homage to mother nature herself, it’s even taken on celebrity status {as seen in keri russel’s pad featured in elle decor}…

so, whilst i concede it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, at least the wood block doesn’t deign to make you one either!

  1. I’m totally with you on the bedside table thing. I really hate it when people have matching ones. There’s something so hotel like and unimaginative about it and very unsexy.Like having twin beds. Ours don’t match, but then why would they when they have different lamps and different paraphernalia on them?

i'd love to hear your thoughts...
