vintage modern montage {this one’s for you doris}…

oh i love a challenge i do… so, when a colleague recently mentioned her potential moving dilemma {relocating a truck load of antique furnishings into a crisp, shiny, new shell of a home}, i interpreted that as a fervent plea for help and jumped on the bandwagon…

so doris, this one’s for you… here are my five top tips for working period pieces into modern spaces…

stocktake {and i’m not talking about the sales}… consider the vintage pieces you’ve lovingly curated and explore what it is, if anything, you still truly love about each of them {are they sentimental keepsakes, family heirlooms, travel finds or were you simply drawn to their colour, shape or style?}…  then, on the basis of your findings, consider this: if your home were a stage {and in many ways it is}, which pieces should play the leading roles and which the supporting acts?

mix it up… throw caution to the wind and consider combining not only old & new pieces, but those that play with scale & form, finish & colour… even different eras can be mixed & matched {there are no rules}… but the secret to making it all work is finding a common denominator… be it colour, style or shape, it’s important to create a relationship that ties everything together…

curate a collection… is your coronation china looking a little sad & lonely on the wall all by itself? give it some friends to play with {afterall, we all need friends} and in turn it will take on a new sense of purpose & presence…. behold, it’s no longer a lonely piece, but part of a masterpiece!

or, alternatively

celebrate the juxtaposition… a kick-ass antique steals the limelight when set against a stark, modern backdrop {and the tension between old & new, rough & smooth creates visual interest & intrigue}

and finally…

bridge the gap… reinterpret, revamp or repurpose ill-fitting vintage pieces to blur the lines between them & their new surrounds… a lick of paint, a fresh fabric, or a new use altogether can bring a tired piece smack bang into visual harmony with its modern surrounds whilst still keeping one foot in its past…

a little vintage + a little modern + a little inventiveness = a whole lotta loveliness…
