house tour {doub hanshaw}…

it was only last week i was touting the virtues of an on-line clothing store, free people, to the girls at work… and today i discover livingetc is featuring the house of doub hanshaw {and her partner john mahaffey}, the label’s creative director…

not too surprisingly, this eclectic home does not disappoint on the style-front {especially for those of us with gypsy leanings}… based in philadelphia, this expansive former garage is spread over 4,500 sq. ft. and features what its owners describe as an “american industrial” vibe

after a little on-line investigation, i happened upon these images from a previous shoot for apartment therapy

resisting the urge to carve up the space, this creative duo have instead maintained a predominantly open-plan living and dining area wherein concrete, wood & metal {with a backdrop of brickwork} prevail…

the raw urban look is softened with layers of rugs, hides and throws…

entertaining on a large scale is never an issue at this enormous hand-made table…
while an expanse of shelving laden with books and decorative objects lends a homely feel to the space…

one of my favourite nooks, a cosy cubby tucked under a mezzanine level {housing the bedroom & bathroom}, is built using repurposed materials…

while concrete & steel feature heavily in the open-plan kitchen…

lace panels add a dreamy quality to the upstairs bedroom and afford privacy from the living area below…
